Help Us Provide Healthcare in the Jungle
Since building its 24-hour clinic in the jungle on the Río Dulce, Ak' Tenamit's health program has grown exponentially. The organization is now the primary healthcare provider for almost 6000 people in 41 remote villages, most of whom had never seen a doctor before Ak Tenamit arrived.

The project's health resources are the stretched thin - the annual health budget works out less than $15 per person per year - but because Ak' Tenamit uses village health promoters, volunteer nurses and doctors, and either donated medicines, or government medicines purchased at cost, our health team accomplishes miracles with meager funds. The use of health education in the Q'eqchi language and preventative medicine in areas such as women's health, prenatal care, and HIV/AIDS awareness further enhance the program's remarkable cost effectiveness. This is extremely important considering the enormous need in the area's poor indigenous villages and the Guatemalan government's historic neglect of the region.

To continue to visit each village every month and provide services to all adults and children, we need help to purchase medicines, especially for chronic conditions, gas for our boats to transport health teams to riverbank sites near the villages, salaries for our Q’eqchi health promoters ($3500 annual salary) and room and board for our international medical volunteers.

Please help us with the vital task by becoming a "Healthcare Partner" for just $120 per year, or by making a “where most needed” donation for general support of our medical program. Read “Another Day at Ak Tenamit” by Dr. Caroline Bervoets in our newsletter.
