Read about Ak' Tenamit in The Rotarian magazine. |
Throughout Ak’ Tenamit’s fifteen years of existence, Rotarians have played a vital role in the project, contributing funds, equipment, supplies and their expertise as medical volunteers, or on work crews. That support has helped Ak’ Tenamit’s education, health and income-generation programs serve many more needy people than they would otherwise have been able to reach.
Rotary support has included donations from individuals, clubs and districts. Rotary Club donations have included funds to purchase medicine, water systems, computers, equipment for the project’s floating dental clinic and village health posts, or small boats, outboard motors and motorcycles for health team trips to villages. Matching grants have purchased equipment for the restaurant school, the women’s vocational-training center, the school cafeteria and solar lighting. In-kind donations have included medical supplies and equipment, classroom furniture, school supplies and backpacks.
Rotary work crews have helped with construction, or painting/repair of the school cafeteria, vocational training center, dormitories, clinic and staff housing. When American Rotary groups travel to Ak’ Tenamit to volunteer, they are hosted by the Rotary Club of Puerto Barrios – a port about 90 minutes by boat from the project site – which is actively involved in the project.
